Reagan’s real legacy was not reducing the size of government or lowering taxes — both of which Robert Samuelson argues didn’t happen — but it was defeating inflation that was sapping the country of strength and caused Jimmy Carter to lose reelection. Today’s battles over Reagan’s legacy, however, rarely mention his defeat of inflation, instead focusing on his personality or other policies:
Liberals want to appropriate Reagan’s present popularity, even though they ridiculed him while he was president as a dangerous moron who was cruelly shredding the social safety net. Conservatives have made Reagan into a quasi-religious figure who must be uncritically worshipped.
